Telangana Health Department Issues Urgent Summer Advisory Amid Severe Heatwave

This action followed a high-impact 'Orange Alert' issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) for more than 20 districts in the state. The warning was necessitated by a rapid escalation in temperatures, with meteorological data forecasting daytime highs between 41°C and 44°C from April 10 to April 13.

Public Health Directives and Safety Measures

To mitigate the risk of heat-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion and heatstroke, officials have implemented strict guidelines for residents. The advisory strongly mandates staying indoors during the peak solar intensity period of 12:00 noon to 3:00 pm. Citizens are encouraged to maintain constant hydration using water and Oral Rehydration Solution (ORS), while avoiding dehydrating agents like alcohol, caffeine, and sugary soft drinks.

For those unable to avoid outdoor exposure, the department recommends wearing light-colored, loose-fitting cotton clothing and using protective headgear such as umbrellas or hats. Additionally, the consumption of water-rich seasonal fruits like watermelon, cucumber, and citrus is highly encouraged to assist in internal temperature regulation.

The heatwave has coincided with systemic challenges, including industrial fire risks and power supply disruptions related to ongoing labor strikes. These factors have complicated efforts to maintain cool indoor environments for the general public.
